The 2008-2009 Belize Premier Football League Closing season came to an end on Sunday July 19 at the Ricalde Stadium in Corozal Town when the second and final game in the championship was played between the visiting Hankook Verdes and the home team Nizhee Corozal.

Hankook Verdes went into the second and final game of the championship with a 1-0 lead over Nizhee Corozal and all that it needed was a draw to clinch this year’s title.

However, that was not to be so as the home team came out in full force to defend its turf and did just that.
The home team got on the scoreboard when Antonio Castillo scored the 1st goal of the game in the 24th minute of play to give his team a 1-0 lead. That goal actually gave Nizhee Corozal a chance to be in the hunt for the title. The lead was further extended when Rafael Rivero scored the 2nd goal of the game in the 26th minute of play. This then put the Nizhee Corozal squad into the driver’s seat of the championship.

The outcome of the championship was determined when Kenrick Pelayo scored his team’s 3rd goal of the game in the 42nd minute of play.

The championship was sealed when Rafael Rivero scored his 2nd and final goal of the game in the 54th minute of play for Nizhee Corozal.

At the end of the long whistle, it was a 4-0 victory for the home team Nizhee Corozal. At the end of the championship, Deris Benavides of Nizhee Corozal was named the Most Valuable Player of the playoff.
